Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, MS, DO, FAMS (born on 1.11.1939, Ambasamudram, Theni Dt.) is one of the founding members of the Aravind Eye Care System and is currently its Chairman Emeritus and Professor of Ophthalmology. After training in USA, he started Vitreous Surgery Centre at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, first of its kind in India in 1975 and then Vitreous Service Clinic at Aravind Eye Hospital in 1979. He is a life member of many national and international professional bodies, including the All India Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Retina Society, USA. He has been involved in many research projects as Principal Investigator and has presented 189 scientific papers at national and international ophthalmic conferences, and has to his credit chapters written by him on various ophthalmic diseases in 8 text books and has written 101 articles in renowned ophthalmic Journals. He has set up a Centre of Relevance and Excellence in Diabetic Retinopathy, in association with Govt. of India, World Diabetes Foundation, Denmark and TOPCON, Tokyo in creating community awareness, health education, training, research and management of diabetic retinopathy. He has set up I.T. enabled Vision Centres in rural areas and established Aravind Virtual Ophthalmic Academy and has taken a leading role in the establishment of Dr. G. Venkataswamy Eye Research Institute.
He has received numerous awards and accolades including Padma Shree Award by the Government of India, Lifetime Achievement Award by the All India Ophthalmological Society and Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association, Achievement Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. B.C. Roy National Award (2006) in the category of Eminent Medical Teacher by the Medical Council of India, Time 100 magazine 2010 honour as one among 100 most influential people in the world, New York, May, 2010 etc.,
