The Vision Rehabilitation Centre at Aravind Eye Hospital was developed in the year 1999, September by the visionary leader Dr P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus Aravind Eye Care System with an objective of serving the vision impaired thereby improving the quality of their life. The centre has undertaken various initiatives to cope with the problem of low vision and Blindness. The service handles around 5,000 patients annually and offers vision enhancement with magnifiers and rehabilitation service to the visually impaired. The service is available only at Aravind Madurai.
The service has all the necessary vision assessment equipment including logmar charts for the paediatric and adult patients. The low vision assessment inventory includes a full range of different types of telescopes, optical and electronic magnifiers including the cctv and non optical aids. A separate paediatric vision stimulation centre for the visually impaired children is available. A centre for training visually impaired graduates in JAWS computer software is available with dedicated systems. This software makes personal computers using Microsoft Windows accessible to the blind and the visually impaired.
