While at Aravind Eye Care System
Welcome to Aravind Eye Care System. We are sure you will thoroughly enjoy your experience here as you achieve whatever you aspired for, during your visit here.

Working Hours
• LAICO and Aravind Eye Hospitals work a six-day week, Monday through Saturday.
• Working hours at the hospitals are 7:00 am - 5:30 pm.
• Working hours at LAICO are 9:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Medical Assistance

• The pharmacy at Aravind carries all the common drugs. However, there are many well-stocked drug stores near the Aravind campus. You should bring your own supply of any special medicines you take, as they may not be readily available in India in the same prescription strengths.
• In case of any medical emergency, the physician at Aravind will be available. Guests who feel ill should not hesitate to see the Aravind physician, as in many cases a simple cure is available for visitors with stomach problems, etc.
 Internet

• Many Aravind buildings and the Aravind Guest House in Madurai provide WiFi. You can connect directly from your laptop. No "security settings" are required – simply turn on your wireless search program, and it should find an access point to connect to. Ask the hospital receptionist where WiFi is available. Internet service at most Aravind locations is often good enough to allow the use of programs such as "skype" for "free" phone calls, although the connection speed sometimes will slow down when the networks are busy. In Madurai, I-way Internet Browsing Centre is just across from LAICO and it offers Internet access at nominal charges. There are quite a few cyber cafes within walking distance of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai.

• Internet from Mobile Phones - Several of the newer high-end mobile phones also have WiFi capabilities. You can use these to perform most of the same functions as a laptop computer. You may even be able to install programs such as “Fring” which allow free Skype calls from your mobile phone.

Dress
People in Tamil Nadu are tradition bound and changes take place slower than in big metropolitan cities in India, making Tamil Nadu a friendly warm place where tourists easily feel at home. It is in Tamil Nadu that you still find most men and women wearing traditional Indian clothing.  Anyone who is seen as inadequately dressed gets undue glares and stares.

So dear visitor /volunteer, while you are visiting Tamil Nadu, especially while you are a visitor /volunteer at Aravind Eye Care System, please consider the following dress recommendations:

Women : It is appropriate to wear long skirts/pants and loose fitting tops (not sleeveless). Strictly avoid tight leggings or jeans and skimpy tops. If you are staying longer, wearing Indian outfits – the salwar-kurthas would be ideal. You can buy these from shops not too far from the hospital and also in the ones near the Meenakshi temple.

Men : Most men usually wear button-down shirts and loose trousers. Avoid wearing jeans, t-shirts or shorts. Most visitors love the cotton material here and often purchase shirts and trousers from readymade shops or have them custom made at nearby tailoring shops or by the tailors near the temple.

Shoes : Sandals or other loose shoes would be comfortable. Most visitors wear socks for fear of foot problems. Flip-flops are useful and can be purchased locally very inexpensively.

Note:
To find out more about the hospital and surrounding area for each Aravind hospital, please check the section on that city, which can be found at the top left side of this page.
