Retina & Vitreous
Retina services at all Aravind Eye Hospitals have registered about 8 to 10% growth in out patient and 4-5% growth in surgical procedure in the past 1 year. Currently it is managing the teaching programmes for post graduates; short term Fellowship on Lasers in Diabetic Retinopathy course; FFA & USG short term course; Long term retina Fellowship programmes. In the research front, current 26 research projects are being conducted in the department. In future research projects sponsored by Allergan, Alcon and NEI are going to be handled in the department. As the retina services are poised to significant growth in the patient services, research, teaching and training, a need based assessment of human and other resources are planned.
Over 180 patients are examined in this Department per day and over 1900 major Vitreo retinal surgeries performed every year.
Equipped with laser units, the various laser procedures like PRP, focal laser treatment and transpupillary thermotherapy and Photo Dynamic Therapy for the treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy wet ARMD and other retinal disorders are done. The state-of the-art OCT and computer generated imaging of fundus fluorescein and Indocyanine Green angiography ensures a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. Procedures like ultrasound and the electrophysiological tests like ERG, multifocal ERG, EOG and VEP are done in appropriate cases. The journal clubs held on Thursday, with an eye on research, exposes the doctors in training to the latest modalities available and involves journal reviews and kindles active academic debates. As part of the diabetic retinopathy project the clinic conducts outreach activities by way of DR screening camps, lectures, panel discussion and exhibitions.

The Retina and Vitreous department has created TIFAC-CORE (Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment council-Centre Of Relevance and Excellence) in Diabetic Retinopathy. The vision of the TIFAC-CORE is to be the best research and training centre for Diabetic Retinopathy in the world with world class expertise and excellence through state-of-the art technology and practice and face the upcoming challenge of diabetic retinopathy in india through a comprehensive approach.
