Dr. S.R.Rathinam is heading the uveitis clinic at Aravind Eye Hospital which has established into a full-fledged sub-speciality clinic offering fellowships in uveitis. It is one of the very few fulltime uveitis clinics in India. It has managed over 25,000 new uveitis patients referred from all over India in 13 yrs.

Besides the clinical and academic carrier she has a very strong research focus in her work. Her work on leptospirosis has been path breaking and many projects have been undertaken to understand its pathogenesis. The work on leptospirosis, a largest series ever reported has helped in characterization of leptospiral uveitis. Her work on Trematode induced granulomatous uveitis, a parasitic eye disease, has dramatically changed the management protocol of this paediatric endemic uveitis, saving vision of children in south India. Her work in this field resulted in recognition of a new paediatric uveitic entity ever reported.

She is a recipient of Mathur award for the outstanding ophthalmic service in the field of medical ophthalmology in India. She is also an elected as a member of International Uveitis study group (IUSG). At present she is the Vice president of Uveitis Society of India and Member Secretary - Institutional review board - 2004.
