Achievements
Since inception, the Aravind uvea clinic has to its credit a number of achievements, notable among them being:
  • The identification of outbreak of treamatode associated granulomatous eye disease in collaboration with Dr.Narasing A.Rao from LA, USA
  • Indentified the epidemic outbreak of panuveitis of unknown etiology ,in November 1993
  • In 1994 Dr.Rathinam detected a pattern of symptoms among the patients in her clinic. Following this, she identified a major epidemic of leptospirosis, a rare sporadic water-borne disease. Dr.Rahinam's studies demonstrated that large numbers of agricultural labourers in India were highly suspectible to the disease and that it had a very specific ocular manifestation by which it could be identified. Her persistent efforts have resulted in setting up of with outside funding a laboratory where sample testing for leptospirosis is done for confirmation.
  • Recognition of a new paediatric uveitic entity in 2000.
Contribution of foreign faculty:
During initial years visits of the great clinician and experienced teacher Dr.Nozik helped a lot in the progress of this sub speciality. Dr.Nozik took classes for our faculty and students during his first visit in 1993. Subsequently Dr.Cunningham added his expertise and visited every year for eight years consecutively. Several international journal publications resulted out of collaborative research with Dr.Cunningham.
