TIFAC-CORE IN DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council – Centre Of Relevance and Excellence)


To realize the dream of a developed India by 2020 a revolutionary initiative called Mission REACH (Relevance and Excellence in ACHieving new heights in educational Institutions) has been launched. At the heart of Mission REACH is TIFAC-CORE. A network of about 80-100 TIFAC –CORE centres are planned in multiple areas throughout India by TIFAC Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. One such TIFAC-CORE centre has been established in Diabetic Retinopathy here at Aravind Eye Hospital & Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology on 21st February 2003.

The vision of this TIFAC centre is to be the best research and training centre for Diabetic Retinopathy in the world with world class expertise and excellence through state-of-the-art technology and practice and face the upcoming challenge of Diabetic Retinopathy in India through a Comprehensive approach. The retina and vitreous department provides the leadership, faculty and facilities couple with the training and academic expertise. The Phase I of the project completed and Phase II has been commenced in 10th July 2007.

WDF Aravind Diabetic Retinopathy Project - I

World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), Denmark, and Aravind Eye Hospital have joined hands to combat diabetic retinopathy attempting to meet the need for developing a holistic model covering awareness creation, service delivery, and training to deal with problems of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in the community. This project was commenced in 1st May 2003. The project activities implemented at three locations Madurai, Tirunelveli (Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Tuticorin Districts). The WDF- Aravind diabetic retinopathy project at Tirunelveli, Madurai, Theni (Phase I) came to an end by April 2006. The World Diabetes Foundation extended its supported to the activities at Tirunelveli for another three years.

AEH, TVL: Awareness creation activities and diabetes and diabetic retinopathy screening and service delivery activities at tertiary care at AEH,TVL.

AEH, Madurai: Mobile Screening and Reading and grading centre
The Reading and Grading Centre has been established. Mobile screening van covering camps, hospitals in the district will be organized from here through VSAT connectivity.

AEH - Theni: Rural Remote Screening Centre has been established in Theni. This centre will provide tertiary care with expert advice from Reading and grading centre at Madurai

WDF Aravind Diabetic Retinopathy Project – II (November 2004 to 2007)

WDF Aravind Diabetic Retinopathy project commenced in Pondicherry region covering Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry districts in November 2004.
Activities: Awareness creation activities and diabetes and diabetic retinopathy screening and service delivery activities at tertiary care at AEH, Puducherry.
Epidemiology survey: Conducted the Prevalence of Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy at Theni District.

WDF Aravind Diabetic Retinopathy Project – III (May 2006 to April 2009)

WDF Aravind Diabetic Retinopathy project commenced in Coimbatore region covering Coimbatore, Salem and Erode districts in May 2006.
Activities: Awareness creation activities and diabetes and diabetic retinopathy screening and service delivery activities at tertiary care at AEH, Coimbatore.
