In health care, while clinical decisions are mostly based on evidence and research rather than following tradition or instincts, the same is not extended to management practice. Evidence is fundamental in the clinical practice for diagnosis, treatment and assessing clinical outcome.

In management practice, it is not common practice to actively seek out information, analyze it scientifically and use it to make a decision. Good management practices prescribe decision-making based on data. In the recent years, in most settings, even though good information systems are in place to capture data systematically, only few organizations analyze this data for finding and using the evidence in their practice.

Managing based on evidence ensures that the decision is sound and the data can convincingly demonstrate the strength of the decision to, both, those at higher levels of authority and those at the level of execution. Data can be better used to motivate people to work towards a defined goal. The use of data in management in turn fosters the spirit of experimentation and innovation at all levels. It clearly and directly communicates to the staff at all levels about their own performance and areas for improvement. Thus, it is time for eye care managers to adopt a paradigm shift towards embracing the use of evidence in management practices.

Over the years, having worked with over 260 hospitals, LAICO has witnessed institutions that have adopted these principles of evidence-based management practice and the positive results of this approach. It is in this context, that LAICO invites you to Madurai for a two-day workshop to share those principles behind this paradigm of management.
