LAICO runs a series of management training and skills development courses to address the need for professionally trained human resource in eye care.
LAICO also co-ordinates several clinical courses that are offered to increase ophthalmic human resources in the country to provide continuing skills development. The training programmes are designed to enable participating hospitals to develop and implement appropriate strategies relevant to their situations.
Need for Training
In the global initiative for prevention of avoidable blindness, “Vision 2020 – The Right to Sight”, the uitilisation of existing infrastructure is estimated as 25% and the target set is 90% level. This requires a complete reengineering and paradigm shift in the way the current facilities work as well as the new projects that will come into existence. It is conservatively estimated that about 1000 institutions are providing eye care in South East Asia. Many of these hospitals have the potential to significantly enhance their service to the community in terms of volume and quality, by adopting new methods and technologies in management and in clinical services, thereby meeting the needs of the community more effectively. This can pave way for financial viability leading to long term sustainability. The following management and skills development courses on eye care services are offered to address this opportunity.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Optometry (two years)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistance (two years)
- Management Training for Eye Care Programme Managers (two weeks)
- Management Training for Ophthalmic Head of Eye Hospitals (one week)
- Management Training and Systems Development for Hospital Administrators / Managers (one month)
- Certificate course for Clinical & Supervisory skills Development in Ophthalmic Paramedical Personnel (three months)
- Project Management Training for Eye Care (one Year)
- Certificate Course on Eye Hospital Operations (six Months)

Task Oriented Training Courses
A deeper understanding of the various tasks that lead to better eye care services makes evident the need for training in such tasks. As such training needs increase, LAICO moved from training in an ad hoc manner to training through a structured programme. Three such courses that have evolved are :
- Instruments Manintenance Courses
- For Technicians (Six weeks)
- For Trainers (Three months)
- For Ophthalmologists (One week)
- Community Outreach and Social Marketing of Eye Care Services (Four weeks)
- Course in Optical dispensing (three months)

Such training is offered throughout the year and scheduling is based on individual needs. These requests often take the form of observation, some hands-on training and spending time in specific clinical or administrative areas.
