Processing of the Donor Tissue
Step 1

Receiving the Eye Ball
Step 2

Slit Lamp Evaluation for Whole Globe
Step 3

Corneal Excission
Step 4

Corneal Endothelium Cell Counting through Specular Microscopy
Step 5

Serology Testing
Slit Lamp Evaluation:
Before excising the cornea, The Eye ball is superficially evaluated under the slit lamp for grading.
- Excellent
- Very Good
- Good
- Fair
- Not suitable for surgery
Corneal Excision:
Following slit lamp Evaluation the cornea is excised from the Eye Ball and stored in a preservative medium. The preservative medium used is Mc Carey Kaufmann (M.K) medium wherein the cornea can be stored for a period of 4 days.
Endothelial cell analysis:
The endothelial cells of the donor cornea can be viewed under a Specular microscopy to analyse its:
- Cell density - ideally it should be > 2000 (PKP)
- Hexagonality of the cells should be more 50%
Serology: |
The 5cc of blood collected from the donor is tested for:
- Human Immuno Deficiency virus (AIDS)
- Hepatits B
- Syphilis
