A Short term training for Ophthalmologists Aravind Eye Hospital in parternership with Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC-CORE) has established this academic training programme to provide high quality training for the general ophthalmologists as well as postgraduates in ophthalmology. TIFAC-CORE has all the necessary infrastructure and a well established Retina-Vitreous centre with a high patient volume to provide excellent hands-on training. Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology in collaboration with Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) - Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has created TIFAC - CORE (Centre Of Relevance and Excellence) in Diabetic Retinopathy. This centre imparts high quality education and training and State-of-the-art facilities for research in the areas of diabetic retinopathy and provides leadership, faculty and infrastructure facilities coupled with training and academic expertise. This TIFAC-CORE is mandated to develop into an international centre of excellence in research, training and develop changes in treatment patterns to prevent blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the foremost causes of blindness in the developing countries. In India, it was the Seventeenth cause of blindness twenty years ago. But today the diabetes related blindness has rapidly ascended to the Sixth position. Early detection and timely treatment of diabetes can substantially reduce the risk of vision loss or blindness from eye diseases. However, most of the diabetic patients are not aware of the fact that the eyes will be affected due to diabetes. Over the years, a lot has been understood about pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and many clinical trials and research have given fruitful results. But it is obvious, from the increasing incidence of diabetic blindness, that these results are not transferred to the physicians and ophthalmologists effectively so as to benefit the patients.
With this idea in the background, TIFAC-CORE offers this Certificate Course in Diabetic Retinopathy. This will help more ophthalmologists to treat these patients early rather than to rely only on the posterior segment surgeons. A candidate undergoing this training will learn:
- Use of indirect ophthalmoscopy
- Slit lamp biomicroscopy
- 3 mirror lens examination
- Recognition and early detection of Diabetic Retinopathy
- Basics of fundus fluorescein angiography
- Indications of photocoagulation
- Basics of B-scan ultrasonography Handling lasers to do panretinal photocoagulation and focal photocoagulation

The centre is equipped with:
- Indirect ophthalmoscopes with accessories
- Fundus camera with provision for fluorescein angiography
- Ultrasonography
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
- Facilities for modern Retina-Vitreous Surgery
- Facilities for laser treatment
- Diagnostic and surgical equipment fitted with video cameras for live demonstration
Teaching curriculum
The course is designed to ensure that the candidate gains proficiency in;
- Training in technique of Indirect Ophthalmoscopy and Slit lamp Biomicroscopy
- Training in performing and interpretation of Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), Ultrasonography (USG) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
- Lectures on lasers - Indications, complications and technique of performing lasers
- Diagnosis and management of Diabetic Retinopathy
- Exposure to vitrectomy surgeries in Diabetic Retinopathy patients.
The curriculum provides extensive hands-on experience supplemented by live demonstrations and lecture classes. A faculty member will be constantly available to demonstrate and assist the candidate at all stages. This two months training is divided into three sections as follows:
- 1st & 2nd week: Use of Indirect Ophthalmoscopy,Slit lamp Biomicroscopy
- 3rd - 4th week: Observation of all lasers, FFA, OCT
- 5th - 8th week: Hands on Session on FFA & Lasers

Recruitment and selection
The course is open to all ophthalmologists and postgraduates. Four candidates will be admitted each month to this course. Candidates from other developing countries are also eligible, subject to fulfilling the procedural formalities of Medical Council of India. The candidates should apply in the prescribed application form with degree and diploma certificates and will be admitted after scrutinizing their credentials and certificates. |
