THE CHILD WHO LOST ONE OF HIS EYES DUE TO CARELESSNESS OF FAMILY MEMBERS
A 6 month old child attempted to grab one of the toys left nearby; but the toy capsized and its pointed portion hit his eye. The carelessness on the part of the family members resulted in the lad losing the injured eye.
The sad incident happened recently in Puducherry area. The child was brought to Aravind - Puducherry with one of his eyes filled with pus. He was examined in the orbit clinic by a doctor who said that since the eye had got badly infected it should be removed.
But the parents and other family members did not give consent for enucleation on the plea that the child’s future will be spoiled by the surgery. The patient-counsellor in the clinic enquired the parents as to what happened to the child. She was shocked to hear their narration which ran as follows:
The mother who had work in the kitchen left the child lying on the floor. She left some toys and made a cordon of pillows around to prevent the child from moving away. The child tried to grab the toys and succeeded in touching one, which turned turtle. The pointed portion of the toy hit the child’s eye. He started to cry when the mother and other family members rushed to the place and tried to pacify the child. But nobody took serious note of the redness which had developed in one eye. 3 days later when the cornea of the injured eye became white, they got afraid and brought the child to the hospital.
Following the family members’ refusal for enucleation, the counsellor explained to them that if the infected eye was not removed, the infection will spread to the brain and endanger sight in the unaffected eye also. By fixing a prosthetic eye later, the otherwise awakward face will present a normal look. However, the eye will have no vision. By this surgery the child’s future life could be ensured, the counsellor said. The doctor also gave the same advice.
The parents agreed for the operation which was performed under anesthesia. After the wound was healed the child was discharged. 15 days later when the child was brought to the hospital for a follow up examination, accompanied by all the family members he looked cheerful. “Now our child has stopped crying and doing well. Aravind has saved his next eye and thus ensured a bright future for him. We are thankful to your hospital, doctors and other employees for saving the unaffected eye of our child” they said.
Despite losing one eye, we wish the child well to see the world, get educated and make progress in life.
