To supplement the income, he began to work in a mill when he was afflicted with keratoconus, a disease that results in the bulging of cornea into a conical shape. His vision began to diminish.
The young boy who came to Aravind Eye Hospital for treatment was advised to wear contact lenses to reduce the bulging. Though the family was not in a position to buy contact lens, he somehow managed to purchase the same. However, after sometime his vision further diminished and he was not able to work. Since the main income from Rakesh came to a stop, the family’s financial position became still worse. His sister had to discontinue her school education.
Rakesh came again to Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai for examination. As his eyes had almost lost vision, doctors advised corneal transplantation. Since the family had no money for operation expenses, the patient and mother expressed their inablitity to give consent for the surgery.
Seeing their plight Aravid came forward to perform operation free of cost. Prior to entering the operation theatre, Rakesh asked the nurses whether he would get his vision. He was reassured that everything will be alright. After the successful corneal transplantation in one eye, doctor informed that Rakesh will most likely regain his vision. These words lit the light of hope in the family members.
As expected, the patient regained vision in a few months. Now he could work again and support his mother and send his sister to the school to continue her education.
Aravind wish them a bright future.
