   Case Study

A mother refused consent for her betrothed daughter to undergo surgery
Case Study A mother did not consent for her daughter to undergo cataract surgery since the girl’s marriage was settled. That young girl of a Uttar Pradesh village would have still remained visually impaired but for the persistent efforts taken by the staff of Aravind managed Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital at Amethi.
The Hindi-speaking girl aged 20 was brought to the hospital by her father for eye examination. The doctor who found cataract in both eyes advised surgery. The very mention of the word “Operation” made the daughter and father weep. The patient - counsellor was called in and asked to do the counselling.
During the conversation the girl informed the counsellor that she had vision problem from childhood. But did not tell her family members. As she grew up, visual impairment also increased. Whenever the family people noticed her difficulty in doing things, she would say nothing.
However, when they happened to visit her relative’s house, her aunt suspected something was wrong with the girl and enquired. She told her the truth. Even if she had informed her family about her visual problem, they could not have taken her for treatment for want of so much money. With nine children her father who was working in a factory managed the family with great difficulty.
Considering the family’s plight, they were offered concessional rate for surgery. They returned home promising to come back after one week but did not turn up even after one month. Two reminders were posted to their address. No reply was received. After sometime, when the hospital conducted an eye camp in the girl’s village, the counsellor had a chance meeting with her and asked why she did not come for operation. As her marriage was settled, operation at that time would lead to cancellation of the ceremony by the bridegroom’s family. So her mother had said ‘no’ to the treatment.
The counsellor took the girl to the camp doctor who called her parents and requested them to bring their daughter for surgery. Finally the mother agreed and accompained the girl to Amethi Hospital. On the next day when the patient was about to be operated upon, the mother suddenly changed her mind and stalled the operation. The patient’s father who had come with his children to the hospital began to weep when he knew what had happened.
Again the doctor talked to the mother and persuaded her to agree. On the same day, surgery was successfully performed in one eye. After 3 days another eye was also operated upon.
When the patient came back to the hospital after one month with her family members for a follow up examination, the counsellor had gone to an eye camp. They waited till she came back and returned home after exchanging pleasantries with her. After six months when the girl visited the hospital for another check up, she had with him her husband! They expressed thanks to the counsellor and doctor for restoring her clear vision.
All along the episode, the counsellor from Aravind - Madurai who was not well conversant with Hindi, managed to do her job. The spirit of service transcends barriers like language and frontiers.
