“Aravind news” proudly reports the news that the Medical Council of India has selected Chairman Dr. P. Namperumalsamy for Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in the category of “Eminent Medical Teacher” for the year 2006. The prestigious award that recognizes the meritorious services of Dr. P. N. as a faculty member of Ophthalmology will be presented by the President of India in the near future.
        The memorable event of Dr. P.N.’s Champalimaud Award Lecture took place at Florida on April 30, 2008 during the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). The lecture has been jointly initiated by ARVO and Champalimaud Foundation as a part of ARVO annual meetings every year. Aravind being the first awardee of the 1 million Euro Antonio Champalimaud Vision Award for 2007, Dr. P.N. who was already presented the award, delivered the first lecture this year.
        Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh is being provided with high quality eye care at affordable costs by the Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital and Research Centre with the collaboration of Aravind Managed Eye Care Services. Initially the Outpatient Department was opened on May 1, 2008. The 150 bedded tertiary hospital will be formally inaugurated in August.
        Aravind Eye Care System’s services for the cause of eliminating global blindness have crossed another milestone on the international border when Aravind-assisted Green Children Eye Hospital was opened on May 12, 2008 at Bogra in Bangladesh. This is the first of the seven eye hospitals the Green Children Foundation has planned for rural Bangladesh. Aravind has trained 3 ophthalmologists and 18 mid level ophthalmic personnel for the Bogra hospital. A core clinical and management team from Aravind is helping the local staff in strengthening key systems and activities.
        Another important event was the inauguration of Aravind Alcon Centre for Surgical Advancement at Aravind – Coimbatore on April 5, 2008. The surgical training centre will cater to both anterior and posterior segment training programmes. It is to be noted that the posterior segment Wetlab is equipped with the state – of – the – art ophthalmosurgical simulator “EYESI”
        Nellikuppam was included in the map of Aravind’s Primary Eye Examination Centres (Vision Centres) on April 11, 2008, when the centre was opened by Cuddalore Collector. The first anniversary of Tiruppuvanam vision centre was celebrated on April 26, 2008 when a series of programmes including a screening programme were held.
        The Spanish Version of DVDs on Instruments Maintenance has been produced with the assistance of Mr. Ismael Cordero of ORBIS International. And Aurolab’s Suture Division has completed its new product “Frontalis Suspension set for patients affected by Ptosis and poor levator function. It is now ready for clinical trial.
