INAUGURATION OF ARAVIND ALCON CENTRE FOR SURGICAL ADVANCEMENT
Aravind-Coimbatore, April 5
Inauguration of the Aravind Alcon Centre for Surgical Advancement was held at Aravind-Coimbatore on April 5. Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, AECS inaugurated the centre. Dr. G. Natchiar, Vice-Chairman, Dr.V.Narendran, CMO, Aravind-Coimbatore, Dr.Kalpana Narendran, Senior Medical Officer, Dr.R.V.Azad, Dr.Ajit Babu Majji, Dr.Mangat Dogra, Dr.Mahesh Shanmugam, Dr.Hemant Moorthy and Dr.Manish Nagpal were the dignitaries who participated in the function.
The surgical training centre will cater to both anterior and posterior segment training programmes. The posterior segment wet lab is equipped with the state-of-the art Ophthalmosurgical simulator “EYESI”, which is the first of its kind in Asia. EYESI is a computer generated virtual reality simulator which has both basic and advanced surgical simulation modules. The centre is situated in an area of about one thousand sq.ft with well equipped anterior and posterior segment wet labs, conference room with lecture facility and library.
INAUGURATION OF NELLIKUPPAM VISION CENTRE
Aravind-Puducherry, April 11
Inauguration of Nellikuppam Primary Eye Examination Centre was held on April 11. Mr. Rajendra Ratnoo, I.A.S., District Collector, Cuddalore, inaugurated the Centre in the presence of Dr. N. Raja, Joint Director, Health Services, Cuddalore and Mr. C.V. Gaikiwat Babu, Chairman, Nellikuppam Municipality. Representatives from local Lions club participated in the function. Dr. R.D. Ravindran, CMO, and Dr. Thiruvenkata Krishnan, Cornea Medical Consultant, welcomed the guests.
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THIRUPUVANAM VISION CENTRE
Thirupuvanam Nadar marriage hall, April 26
The first anniversary of Tiruppuvanam vision centre was held on April 26. When a public function was conducted for the local community, a series of programmes were planned aimed at providing value to the patients of vision centre. Dr. Rupa, Medical Officer,
Mr. Vivekanandan, camp organizer and Sr. Muthu Manimekalai vision centre counsellor facilitated the function. A health education exhibition was arranged in the hall. Dr.Krishnadas, CMO, Aravind- Madurai attended the function and addressed the public. Mr.P.Ramachandran, Thirupuvanam, Mr. Ramasamy, Headmaster, Thirupuvanam Girls High school, Mr. Seerkalan and Nadar Sangam members participated. Dr.Kowsalya, Consultant Ophthalmologist facilitated the questioning session and clarified audience doubts related to eye care raised by the public. Mr. Ramesh babu proposed vote of thanks.
Screening Programme was held in that 21 of them confirmed as glaucoma patients and advised to follow medications and one was referred to base hospital for cataract surgery. Diabetic Retinopathy screening camp was held in that seven of them were confirmed as Diabetic Retinopathy.
INAUGURATION OF OUT PATIENT DEPARTMENT AT INDIRA GANDHI EYE HOSPITAL & RESEARCH CENTRE
Lucknow, May 1
Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital & Research Centre, Amethi, after making a remarkable mark in the rural of Uttar Pradesh has opened its tertiary hospital at Lucknow, the capital city. IGEHRC, Lucknow has opened its OPD on May 1, 2008. Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust – Trustee, Wing Commander (Retd) Manoj Muttu, AMECS – Director Dr.Aravind Srinivasan, Administrator, AECS, Dr. Kuldeep, CMO, IGEHRC and a few representatives of RGCT and the staff of IGEHRC & Aravind Eye Hospital attended the function.
IGEHRC, Lucknow is a 150 bedded state-of-the art eye care set up which has pooled up the best Ophthalmologists from all over India. Apart from General Ophthalmology they have Specialties of Paediatric, Glaucoma, Retina and supportive services of Pharmacy and Optical Shop. The hospital will be formally inaugurated in the month of August.
INAUGURATION OF GRAMEEN GC EYE HOSPITAL, BOGRA
Dear All,
Fabulous day of celebration, connection, and inspiration!
The full day of May 12 involved a long vehicle ride out of Dhaka to Bogra, arriving in 100 degree heat, followed by a three hour inauguration/hospital tour and a long ride back to Dhaka. Along the route both ways, the participants were treated to a refreshing lunch and dinner. Lots of opportunity to mix and mingle with Professor Yunus, senior Grameen staff, and international support team for the hospital.

DR. P.N’S CHAMPALIMAUD AWARD LECTURE AT ARVO
Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System, delivered Champalimaud Award Lecture at ARVO annual meeting for 2008. He highlighted the multifarious contributions of Aravind towards preventing and eliminating needless blindness in India and other developing countries of the world.
The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) is the world’s most respected eye and vision research organisation with 12, 000 researchers from 73 countries as its members.
Antonio Champalimaud Vision Award which carries with it a cash prize of 1 million Euro (approximately Rs. 5.5. crores) has been awarded to Aravind for its contributions to the alleviation of visual problems, primarily in developing Countries. ARVO and Champalimaud Foundation have jointly instituted the Champalimaud Award Lecture as a part of ARVO annual meetings every year. And the first lecture was delivered by Dr. P.N. this year.

B.C. ROY AWARD FOR Dr. P.N
We are proud of our beloved chairman Dr. P. Namperumalsamy for having been conferred the “B.C. ROY AWARD" by the Medical Council of India in the Category of "Eminent Medical Teacher”. The Management Committee of Dr. B.C. Roy National Award Fund has selected Dr. P.N. for the prestigious National Award for the year 2006.
A communication to this effect has been received from Dr. P.C. Kesavankutty Nayar, President (Acting), Medical Council of India. The award will be presented by the President of India later.

CME PROGRAMME ON PAEDIATRIC EYE DISEASES AND RADIOLOGY IN PAEDIATRIC
Aravind-Tirunelveli, April 20
CME Programme on Paediatric Eye Diseases and Radiology in Paediatric was conducted for Pediatricians at Aravind-Tirunelveli on April 20. A total of 45 pediatricians from Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari Districts participated in the CME. Dr.Gopinath, Radiologist and Dr.S.Raju, Paediatrician participated as Chief Guests.
The CME began with welcome address by Dr.R.Ramakrishnan, CMO, Aravind-Tirunelveli, followed by a talk on “paediatric eye diseases” by Dr. Meenakshi, paediatric Ophthalmologists. Dr.Ankit Avasthi spoke on "Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Dr.R.Ramakrishnan gave a talk on "Developmental Glaucoma". Dr.Gopinath, Radiologist from Aarthi CT Scan spoke “Paediatric Radiology" and Dr.S.Raju, Paediatrician from Krishna Nursing Home gave a talk on "Torch Infections". All the participants of the CME were given laminated Snellen chart with instructions to be displayed in their Clinics. This was given with an aim to create Vision Corridor.

LOW VISION & REHABILITATION ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
Aravind-Madurai, April 6
An orientation Programme on low vision rehabilitation was held for vision centre technicians and CBR field workers. The trainees from all the Centres participated in the Programme through video teleconferencing. They discussed various topics like CBR project, low vision assessment and low vision aids, case finding, documentation, and interventions.
OUTPATIENT EXHIBITION
Aravind-Tirunelveli, April 9-10
Outpatient Exhibition was held at Aravind-Tirunelveli from April 9- 10. Various charts, equipment, eye ball models, OP layout models made out of thermacol, photos and video were displayed in the Exhibition. A total of 152 patients visited the exhibition. The exhibition was well appreciated by all those who visited and was also an eye opener to most of them.
KALANJALI - 2008
Tirunelveli, April 14
All India exhibitions on handicrafts and Handlooms was launched on April 14 at Tirunelveli. All the staff members from Housekeeping Department from Aravind-Tirunelveli visited this exhibition. More than 60 craftsmen had their handworks displayed in this exhibition and they were also available for sale. This exhibition showcased Teak wood products with decorations, Marble items from Rajasthan, Brass items from Moradabad, Lak Bangles from Jaipur, Terracotta Porcelain products from West Bengal, Statues, Handbags, Hyderabad Pearls, Rasi Stones, Jewellery and several handcraft products.
INSTRUMENTS MAINTENANCE DVD IN SPANISH
The Spanish version of our DVDs on Instruments Maintenance has been produced with the assistance of Mr. Ismael Cordero, Health Care Technology Specialist, ORBIS International, New York. Ismael who had come to Madurai just for this job came with the Spanish translation of the text material that was sent to him earlier. The Spanish text is voice recorded in his voice in our audio visual department. Later the audio and video were integrated and with some improvements in animations made by our videographers the final editing and recording were all done over a weekend. Mr. Ismael has said “I really enjoyed helping dub your excellent equipment maintenance DVD into Spanish. Now our Spanish-speaking Latin American partners also will be able to benefit from it”. He has also appreciated the “impressive work” of the instruments maintenance team and the audio visual team.

LAICO RETREAT
Puducherry, April 9-12
A total of 22 members participated in the LAICO Retreat held at Aravind-Puducherry from April 9-12. LAICO division members, Central office LAICO facilitators, Leadership team, and Potential LAICO contributors were the groups participated in the retreat. The main purpose of the retreat was reflections to move forward, not intended as problem solving, more for setting the broader directions. The objective of this retreat is to define LAICOs role through each of the divisions in global eye care community within Aravind.

CME PROGRAMME
Aurolab participated in the CME on 23 Guage Vitrectomy, AMD management and ophthalmic brachytherapy that was held from 5th to 6th April, 2008 at Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore. Mr. Karthigeyan, Key accounts Executive and Mr. Sethu Mathavan, Area Development Manager represented Aurolab during the CME programme. Aurolab promoted its new products “Aurogel” – High Quality Viscoelastic Solution and “Reti Eye” – A tool to practice Indirect Ophthalmoscopy and Photocoagulation and strongly suggested its existing products to the ophthalmic society.
NEW PRODUCT
Frontalis Suspension set (Ptosis Slings)
The Suture division of Aurolab is going to come up with its new product “Frontalis Suspension set” soon. Now the product is ready for clinical trail. Frontalis suspension is useful in patients with significant ptosis and poor levator function. Its silicone tubing sleeve provides a method for securing rods and allows postoperative adjustment of the sling.
