A SEVEN YEAR OLD CHILD GETS PROSTHETIC EYE WITH THE HELP OF RING OF HOPE

case study       This is a sad story of a child who got afflicted with Retinoblastoma when he was only 3 months old. The incurable disease ultimately caused enucleation of the left eye. It was substituted by a readymade eye which marred the childs natural appearance. Aravind replaced the readymade one with a customised prosthetic eye with the financial help of the RING OF HOPE FUND much to the delight of the patient and his parents.
The child Prabhakar (real name shielded) was born to a poor parents belonging to a village in Pudukottai district. When he was about 3 months old, his left eye got affected by retinal cancer. As a result the eye was removed in a Chennai hospital.
Later a readymade eye was implanted in the left orbit. However it looked different from his right eye. As a result the boys face lost its naturalness. People who looked at the boy began to ask what is wrong with his eyes. Such remarks caused much pain to the parents.
At the age of 7, Prabhakar was brought to Aravind Eye Hospital by his parents to seek a remedy for the problem. Doctors who examined him advised replacing of the readymade eye with a customised prosthetic eye that would look like a real one. And they referred the patient to the Ocular Prosthetics Centre.
The staff at the centre explained to the parents as to how the Prosthesis is made to exactly suit the childs orbit and the costs it would entail. They took leave of them saying we will have the prosthetic eye when we come for the next follow-up examination.
However, they repeated the same words at every followup examination once in 6 months. The preplexed staff enquired the parents why they were postponing prosthetics procedure. They hesitantly replied we have no money for that! Moved by the plight of this poor people, the doctor at the centre helped to get the required money from the RING OF HOPE FUND. With the amount received from the fund, the prosthesis was implanted in Prabhakars left orbit.
When the boy looked at his eyes in the mirror and the parents saw their sons face after the end of the procedure, broad smiles curled over their steep cheek. Before returning home with the child, the parents heartily thanked the doctors and sisters and showered well wishes for Aravind Eye Hospital.
