THE FIRST “KERATOPROSTHESIS” IN ARAVIND
A Keratoprosthesis or “artificial” cornea is indicated in cases of corneal blindness for which a conventional keratoplasty (Penetrating Keratoplasty - PKP) has failed (repeated failed grafts) or is likely to carry a poor prognosis (conditions include Steven-Johnson’s Syndrome, Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, severe chemical burns etc.)
The concept of an artificial cornea originated in 1789 when Pellien de Quengsy floated the idea of a Keratoprosthesis to treat corneal blindness. There was a lot of pioneering done during the 18th and early 19th centuries. However, the complication rate was very high. Tissue necrosis and extrusion of the device was common. The first corneal transplantation was performed in 1905 and the success of PKP also saw a failing interest in Keratoprosthesis.
The Boston Keratoprosthesis was conceptualized and devised by Dr.Claes Dohlman and co-workers at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston Massachusetts. The present device has been refined after various modifications and design changes contributing to a low rate of complications.
The type 1 Boston Keratoprosthesis is indicated in cases of repeated failed corneal grafts with a good tear film and good lid function. The device is made of medical grade PMMA.
At Aravind Eye Hospital Madurai, the first Boston KeratoProsthesis surgery was performed on 5th Feb ’08 under the guidance of Dr.Anthony Aldave M.D Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Cornea Service at Jules Stein Eye Institute UCLA. The patient was a 68 year old female with a history of repeated failed grafts (three each in the right and left eyes). She underwent the Keratoprosthesis surgery in her left eye. 2 more cases were performed in the following week and at a three week follow up all three patients were doing well with good visual recovery.

SHARE, STANDARDISE AND CAPTURE-HR RETREAT
Aravind-Theni, February 15-16, 2008
Human Resource Department, Aravind Eye Care System, organised an annual HR Retreat from February 15-16 at Theni. The theme of the retreat was Share, Standardise and Capture. Director – HRD, HR staff, Representatives of MLOPs and Personnel Department staff of Aravind Eye Care System attended the retreat led by Ms. Preethi Pradhan, Sr Manager, HRD. There were a total of 24 participants representing the 5 hospitals as well as the Managed Eye Hospital coming up at Lucknow.
The retreat began with each hospital presenting a report of their activities in 2007 through videoconference. This served to evaluate what was done and plan effectively for the year 2008. The main areas of discussion in the retreat were
- To review previous years’ HR activities to plan more effectively for the future
- Consolidation of all HR work to understand the progress of HRD as a whole
- To have a better grip on “what went well” and “what could have gone better”
The need to document and standardize the work and have a process in place for sharing best practices with each other was emphasized in the retreat. Though the two days were intense with various sessions, group work and presentations, they provided a forum for the various HR staff to interact with each other and reach a level of better understanding. There were also moments of relaxation as the group was taken on a trip to Ambasamudram, our Chairman’s village.
The HR calendar captures the main activities that the department plans to do. The sessions were extremely useful as it paved the way for a clear-cut road map and also in prioritising the HR activities for the year 2008. Thus the two-day HR retreat provided a clear understanding of how, HR, HR Representatives and Personnel staff could contribute to the better functioning of Aravind Eye Care System.

LIFE-ALTERING EXPERIENCE AT ARAVIND EYE HOSPITAL
Providence brought me, a Singaporean visiting India in the closing months of 2007, to Aravind Eye Care System and to Dr.R.D.Ravindran - causing an unexpected turn in my life for the better.
Dr.R.D.Ravindran, the Joint-Director and Chief Medical Officer of Aravind Eye Hospital at Pondicherry, India, performed life-altering cataract surgery on both my eyes. He is a man who lives up to the true spirit of Dr. G. Venkataswamy, the founder of Aravind Eye Hospital, giving his best and unsentimental care to his patients.
On my return to Singapore within one month of surgery, Dr.R.D.Ravindran had connected me to Dr. B. Maheshwar, an ophthalmologist trained in Aravind Eye Hospital, now working in Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Department of Alexandra Hospital at Singapore. As such Dr. Maheshwar knew the operations at Aravind Eye Hospital, there was no need for me to explain my case in detail. Speaking largely in Tamil, Dr. Maheshwar made me feel right at home, as if I was at Aravind Eye Hospital itself. He not only had a high regard and respect for Dr. R. D. Ravindran but also continued the same care that Dr.R.D.Ravindran had given me in Pondicherry.
