Dear Readers,

May, 29, 2008 was yet another golden day in the history of Aravind Eye Care System when Chairman Dr. P.Namperumalsamy received Gates Award for Global Health-2008 which has been conferred on the institution. The presentation ceremony was held in Washington. “Aravind News” presents the report in this issue with pride and joy.
        Dr. Venkatesh Prajna has been appointed as a member of the Board of Council of Asia Cornea Society based at Singapore. He is now one of the two Indian members in the 14 member council. Dr. Narendran and his team have successfully performed the first Ophthalmic Brachytherapy using Iodine 125 seeds in India.
        Aravind School of Optometry has been shifted to the LAICO building on May 20. And a low vision resource centre with a sales counter has been established at the Vision Rehabilitation Centre, Madurai.
        Dr. V.R. Muthukkaruppan and Dr. P. Sundaresan visited the U.S to attend the ARVO meeting. Mr. Ganesh Babu visited WHO in Geneva in connection with developing Presbyopia study data management software.
        A Vision building and Strategic Planning Workshop was held at LAICO from May 19-24 which had the participation of 41 members from five countries. Aurolab’s first team attended the outbound learning programme at Pegasus Institute, Marakkanam and Aurolab has received CE Certificate for its quality manufacturing in the new plant.

Dr. P.N. receiving the ‘Gates Award’ ‘GATES AWARD’ FOR GLOBAL HEALTH 2007
Aravind-Coimbatore, April 5
Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System received the prestigious Gates Award for Global Health for 2008 on May 29, 2008. In a grand ceremony held at Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington D.C, U.S.A, Bill Gates Sr, presented the $ 1 million Gates Award to our chairman. Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Joint Director, AECS also attended the function.





DR. PRAJNA APPOINTED COUNCIL MEMBER OF ASIA CORNEA SOCIETY
Dr. Prajna appointed council member of Asia Cornea Society Dr. Venkatesh Prajna, Cornea Specialist and Surgeon of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Council of Asia Cornea Society. A communication to this effect has been received from Prof. Donald Tan, President of the Society.
      Asia Cornea Society which was formed at Singapore in 2007 serves as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and information on clinical, educational and research aspects of the corneal sub speciality among the specialists and researchers throughout Asia. Its ultimate aim is alleviation of corneal blindness.
      Dr. Prajna who is a professor of Aravind’s Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology and Chief of Education and Training Programme of Resident doctors becomes one of the 14 Board of Council Members of Asia Cornea Society. He is one among the two Indians included in the Council. Other members are from Singapore, Japan, China Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Phillipines.

Dr. Narendran and his team achieved a magnificent feat DR. NARENDRAN AND HIS TEAM ACHIEVED A MAGNIFICENT FEAT
Dr. Narendran, CMO, Aravind-Coimbatore, and his team successfully performed the first case of Ophthalmic Brachytherapy using Iodine 125 seeds manufactured by Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) on May 26, 2008. It is a case of a large choroidal melanoma. Last week they did their second case and the third case is due next week. This is the first time in India that I-125 seeds from BARC have been used commercially which had earlier been used only in pilot studies.

Aravind AMRF team attended Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Dr. V.R. Muthukkaruppan, Director-Research, and Dr. P.Sundaresan, Senior Scientist, AMRF attended Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO)-2008 meet from April 27- May 1 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Dr. P. Sundaresan made a poster-presentation on “Low prevalence of known disease causing mutations in south Indian Leber congenital Amaurosis patients”. After the ARVO meeting he visited National Eye Institute, Bethesda, and worked for two weeks on “Molecular genetics on POAG” in Dr.J. Fielding Hejtmancik laboratory and he met several eminent researchers and ophthalmologists during the visit to ARVO and NIH/NEI.

Mr. Ganesh Babu visited World Health Organisation at Geneva Mr. Ganesh Babu, Senior Manager, IT & Systems visited World Health Organisation at Geneva, Switzerland from May 4-10 to work with Dr.Leon and Dr.Pierre Huguet for Presbyopia study data management software. They reviewed the forms and data entry screens and discussed the issues faced during the pilot testing of the forms. At the end, the team produced WHO Presbyopia study kit containing Protocol, Forms, Epi-info software, and software for data entry and cleaning, code book and installation guide. During this visit, he met Dr. Jacob Robert for discussion on ICD codes and Dr. Sherge Reskinoff for getting an overview on WHO Infobase.

Aravind School of Optometry shifted to at Laico ARAVIND SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY SHIFTED TO AT LAICO
LAICO, May 20, 2008
Aravind School of Optometry was inaugurated in its new premises on May 20. Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, AECS inaugurated the centre in the presence of the Essilor representatives Mr. Sugavanam and Mr. Saugatha. The function was attended by Dr. G. Natchiar, Vice-Chairman, Dr. M. Srinivasan, Director, Mr. R.D. Thulasiraj, Executive Director, Dr. S. Aravind, Administrator, Dr. K. Ilango, medical officer and other optometry staff.

Graduation day for the IInd year MLOP trainees was held at Aravind-Madurai Puducherry, and Tirunelveli. At Aravind-Madurai the Graduation day was celebrated on May 19, May 25 and on May 28 respectively. Candle Lighting and Oath was taken by all the MLOPs trainees and they shared their learning experiences and dreams.




Low Vision Resource Centre, Madurai LOW VISION RESOURCE CENTRE
A low vision resource centre with a sales counter has been established at the vision rehabilitation centre at Madurai for the benefit of low vision patients. The low vision resource centre will help in procurement and sourcing of low vision assessment charts, equipment and providing inventory of low vision aids to institutions and trainees planning low vision services.




56th INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE COURSE
Aravind-Madurai, June 11, 2008 The Valedictory function of the 56th Instruments Maintenance course
The Valedictory function of the 56th Instruments Maintenance course was held at the Jubilee Hall of the Department on June 11, 2008. Two technicians from Myanmar and two from India attended the course. Mr. R. D. Thulasiraj, Executive Director, LAICO presided over the graduation ceremony and distributed the certificates to the out going trainees. He emphasized the need for having trained instruments technicians for the efficient use of the instruments in a modern hospital. Dr. Ramakrishnan, Assistant Administrator Aravind-Madurai, gave away the tools kit to the trainees.

Aurolab Staff at Pegasus Workshop PEGASUS WORKSHOP FOR AUROLAB STAFF
The first batch of Aurolab staff attended the outbound learning programme at the Pegasus Institute, Marakkanam from May 22-24. A total of 25 staff members from Aurolab participated in the workshop. The outbound learning built a sense of camaraderie amongst the group. It created an atmosphere to know about one and others. The learnings from the two days training could be easily linked to work place environment. In all it was a fun filled two days of learning and a journey of discovery about oneself and others.




CE Certification to Aurolab CE CERTIFICATION
The CE certification audit was conducted on February 04 and 05, 2008 by TUV Rheinland, Germany. The Lead Auditor Mr. Hans Bienert from Germany and Co auditor Mr. Guru Prasad from Bangalore conducted the audit. As a result of it, Aurolab has received the CE certificate for its product quality manufacturing in the new plant.

Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai Aravind Eye Hospital is a boon to the visionless people. It is a vision temple in which doctors remain as deities with a dispensary that functions as store-house of “Prasads”. The service of patient-counsellors is like diamond stones in a golden anklet….. Thus goes the glorifying verse of Mr. Abdul Rahim (not his real name) of Madurai who underwent surgery for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma in both eyes at Aravind-Madurai.
      Mr. Rahim who has regained vision after surgery has written a letter to the Counsellors in the Glaucoma Clinic. more (...)
