Mr. Karthikeyan undergone his Externship training at Lumbini Eye Institute, Bhairawa, Lumbini Zone, Nepal
Manager - Paediatric Services Aravind-Coimbatore
For my externship I was posted in Lumbini Eye Institute located in Bhairawa, Lumbini Zone, Nepal.
The doctors and hospital staff most of whom had received training at Aravind, treated me with great care and respect. Since the hospital is only 3 kilometres away from the Indian border (Uttar Pradesh), 80% of the patients come from India, while only 20% are from Nepal. The main problem I faced while I was there was communication, since the only languages spoken there are Hindi and Nepali. I had the opportunity to visit Lumbini Garden. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is about 20 kilometres from Bhairawa. The holy place includes the Mayadevi Temple, which features a bas relief depiction of Mayadevi, the Buddha's mother and a sacred stone marked with a "foot imprint" of Ashoka. The Ashokan Pillar, the oldest known monument in Nepal, lies to the west of the Mayadevi Temple. Today only the lower shaft of the pillar stands, as the upper has been split into two. To the south of the pillar is Pushkarni, the sacred pond, wherein Mayadevi is said to have had taken a bath just before giving birth to the Buddha. It has been included in the list of World by the UNESCO. Overall, the trip was wonderful and memorable. |
