Manager-Patient Care
Aravind-Madurai

Islamia Eye Hospital and M.A. Ispahani Institute of Ophthalmology I was posted at the Islamia Eye Hospital & M.A. Ispahani Institute of Ophthalmology located in Dhakka, Bangladesh, for 6 weeks as part of my externship. It was my first visit to the eastern to another country.
The Islamia Eye Hospital was founded in 1960 and is one of the largest eye hospitals in Bangladesh. The hospital has 220 beds with an average of 900 outpatients and 60 inpatients per day. Staffers of the hospital had come to Aravind - Madurai for a vision building workshop in 2004.
The assignments which I handled there included remodelling of a store, helping to prepare a plan for a secondary hospital with 20 beds, and a project aimed at streamlining the flow of patients.
The hospital authorities treated me with great care and respect, and it was really interesting to learn about the kinds of systems and procedures employed by another hospital. It was also a great opportunity to put into practice all that I have learned during my fellowship at Aravind.
The main challenge I faced was in communication, because the local language was Bengali.
Despite a few minor problems at the border, everything was fine and the trip was an interesting and memorable one.
