Dr. R.K. RECEIVES A RARE DISTINCTION
Dr. Rama Krishnan, Aravind-Tirunelveli Dr Ramakrishnan, Chief Medical Officer of Aravind-Tirunelveli has been accorded a rare distinction of being invited by Dr George Spaeth to be a distinguished member of the International Fellow of Spaeth Society (IFSS). This is a very rare and coveted recognition and he is probably the first Indian ophthalmologist to have received this honor. Dr Ramakrishnan has been trained by Dr George L Spaeth at Wills Eye Hospital in 1989.
Dr George Spaeth, a renowned Glaucoma Specialist, is the Director of Glaucoma Services of Wills Eye Hospital of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia (Philadelphia State, USA). This institute has been consistently in the list of the Top Ten Eye Hospitals in the USA for the past several years. Dr Spaeth has made significant contributions in our understanding of glaucoma and has been a teacher non-parallel in the last decades of the twentieth century.
His research activities are centered around the characterisation and natural history of the cardinal manifestations of glaucoma, in particular-the anterior chamber angle, the visual field and the optic nerve. His teachings have profoundly influenced students and practitioners of glaucoma around the globe and it is an extra ordinary moment of pride for all of us at Aravind to see Dr Ramakrishnan as an elite member of Spaeth’s International Society. The only precedent of such a significant recognition is that of Dr. Namperumalsamy who was made a distinguished fellow of the legendary Schepen’s International Alumni.

SPECTACLES MOUNTED INDIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPE
Spectacles mounted indirect ophthalmoscope, Aravind-Madurai Ms. N. Kasthuri and Prof. V. Srinivasan of the Instruments Department demonstrated the inexpensive spectacles mounted indirect ophthalmoscope built by them taking help from Dr. Anand Rajendran of the Retina Department. A special feature of the instrument is that reflections are produced by total reflecting prisms. There is no need for a separate power supply. The instrument is operated by dry cells mounted on the spectacles frame. The source of light is a super bright white LED. The LEDs have infinite life and need not have to be replaced. The instrument is customised and built for the IPD of the user and there is no need for any IPD adjustment. It is possible to include the spectacles power of the observer in the spectacles mount so that a person wearing glasses can use it with out worrying about his/her own spectacles.
The instrument was shown to Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Dr. R. Kim and Dr. D. Shukla of our Retina Department and they have welcomed the idea and have made significant suggestions for improvement before producing it for wider distribution.
