CME ON STERILISATION & ASEPTIC TECHNIQUES IN EYE SURGERY

Two day workshop for the Operation Theatre Personnel on Sterilisation & Aseptic Techniques in Eye Surgery – Refresh, Recollect and Refine was held on January 3-4 at Aravind-Madurai. Participants from 75 institutions of Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh attended the workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to expose the participants to the key concepts of sterilisation in OT and to provide an opportunity to observe and have hands-on-experience for having an infection free environment.
The topics covered were sources of infection, patient cleanliness, dress code and scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures, Types of sterilisation, equipments cleaning and maintenance, trolley set up, phaco equipment set up, instruments cleaning, bin packing and autoclaving, handling of sterile consumables, physical infrastructure cleaning, Causes of infection, ophthalmic instruments maintenance and condemnation, biomedical waste management and infection control committee.
The workshop was based on sound theoretical concepts with practical through live demonstration. The faculty members were senior OT nurses who are working in the Operation Theatre for over 10-15 years and hold the post of a manager, supervisor, and tutor.
Dr.Lalitha Prajna, Ocular Microbiologist participated in the discussion and clarified the doubts of the participants with regard to sterilisation and Aseptic practices. Translations were provided in four regional languages for understanding the concept clearly. Dr.Usha, Chief of Orbit and Oculoplasty, and Dr.Haripriya were present at the CME program.
At the end of the two day workshop the participants had a clear understanding of sterilization of instruments, and operation theatre, maintenance of equipment and there by improving the surgical quality and productivity
