A PIONEERING BIBLIOMETRIC STUDY OF PUBLICATIONS BY INDIAN OPHTHALMOLOGISTS
Following is an abstract on bibliometric study of publications by Indian Ophthalmologists and Vision Researchers. The study was done by Ms. Kumaraguruapri, Librarian, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai and co authored by
Dr. Lalitha Prajna, Chief, Microbiology Department, AEH and Pamela Sieving, Biomedical librarian, NIH, Library, Bethesda, USA which is accepted for presentation in the ARVO. Probably this is the first study of its kind accepted for presentation in an international meeting.
The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the peer-reviewed scientific and clinical literature generated by ophthalmologists, optometrists and vision researchers in India appearing between 2001 and 2006, to assess productivity, trends in publication types and journals in which these publications appeared, research funding, and collaborative research patterns.
The authors searched PubMed for articles. They identified research collaborations and funding from indexing for research support and classified articles as reporting basic science, clinical science, or clinically descriptive research.
A total of 2163 citations meeting study criteria were retrieved. Annual output during the study period increased from 284 articles in 2001 to 460 articles in 2006. More than 50% of the total came from just nine major eye hospitals in India.
Conclusions of the study: Research productivity by Indian ophthalmologists, optometrists and vision researchers increased in both quantity and quality in the short time period we examined. Identified barriers to further increases in the quantity and quality of vision research include limited access to information resources by students, clinicians and basic researchers; lack of funding for research; absence of laboratories, hardware and software; low standards for patient-related data collected during patient care; and limited opportunities during physician training programs for education and experiences in research methods and skills.

A Youngman from Chennai thanks Aravind Ocular Prosthetics Centre
Accidents are unfortunate. And when an accident results in grievous injuries like the one that causes loss of life or sight, it is tragic. Such a tragedy struck a young man belonging to Chennai who besides losing sight in his left eye, lost the whole eye ball also and became unsightly. Reconciling with the loss of one eye, he tried to regain his good look with the help of various ocular prosthetics centres. But what he received from them was not up to his satisfaction except the one he got at last from Aravind Eye Hospital.
Mr. Dinesh (real name shielded) aged 26, who is a resident of Chennai, met with an accident and sustained severe injury on the left eye which lost vision instantly. As it was damaged beyond repair the eye ball had to be enucleated at a Chennai Hospital.
The Youngman got terribly upset at the loss of his good appearance by enucleation. He went round various ocular prosthetics centres at Chennai and other places to get a face - lift. The readymade artificial eye fixed on his left orbit did not satisfy him inspite of his spending a lot of money.
When someone informed him about Aravind Eye Hospital, Mr. Dinesh immediately set out for Madurai with his mother. At the Ocular Prosthetics Centre, a custom made prosthesis was fixed in his left orbit. He was immensely happy when he looked at the mirror which reflected his face.
“I had spent a lot of money with very famous eye hospitals around Tamilnadu and Chennai. But all these treatment could not help me to reach my requirement. So, I chose Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. Here I came for cosmetic treatment to reform my left eye. In the Ocular Prosthetics Centre my treatment started and continued. The final result is very good and my left eye appearance has really become wonderful. Now I have got confidence to work with my college officials. My heartfelt thanks to Aravind”- Mr. Dinesh has stated in his thanks giving letter that bears the signature of his mother also.
