ARAVIND'S MOBILE SCREENING UNIT PROMOTES AWARENESS OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Case Study Ramu, aged 57, has been afflicted with diabetes for the past 30 years, yet, until recently, he was unaware of how his condition was affecting his retinas -- and consequently his vision.
Living with his wife and 3 children in Mettupalayam, Ramu works in a private company with a meager income. He found out that he was diabetic 30 years ago when his blood was tested during treatment in a hospital for the injuries he sustained in an unrelated accident.
Over time, Ramu has undergone treatment for his diabetes at the Primary Health Centre in Karamadai, receiving regular insulin injections. One day not long ago, when he went to the health centre for treatment, the government doctor informed him that Aravinds mobile screening van would soon visit the centre. The doctor advised him to come on that particular day and get his retinas examined.
On the day of the camp, Ramu was examined and the technician of the mobile unit transmitted Ramu's fundus images to Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai via the satellite. An ophthalmologist at the hospital analyzed the images and sent a report to the technician in the mobile unit, indicating that both of Ramu's retinas were affected by Diabetic Retinopathy. The eye camp counsellor informed him about the condition of his retinas and the imperative of getting treatment in the hospital to save his remaining vision.
Ramu accepted the counsellors advice and returned home, promising to go to Aravind Coimbatore immediately. He thanked Aravinds mobile van for making him aware that he is afflicted with Diabetic Retinopathy.
