THE CHIEF'S FIRST MEMORIAL DAY
The First Memorial Day of Dr. V was observed on 07-07-07 at all Aravind Eye Hospitals. At Aravind - Madurai alone large number of employees present at the different locations (LAICO, Aravind Eye Hospital, Nurses Hostel) to the Dr. V's Memorial Day. At all the AEHs, the CMO's presented the achievements of Aravind from July 2006 to July 2007. All senior leaders and senior staff shared their experience about Dr. V. They reminisced their association with the Chief and pledged to carry forward his mission.
INAUGURATION OF VISION CENTRE
Rameshwaram, July 11
Rameshwaram Vision Centre was inaugurated on July 11, 2007 by Haji. A. P. J. M. Maraickayer in the presence of Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, AECS, Mr. G. Srinivasan, President, Govel Trust and Dr. Krishnadas, CMO, AEH-Madurai. Rameshwaram which is 180 Km away from Madurai. Rameshwaram and its surroundings do not have any eye care facility. The population of 1, 50,000 have to travel about 60km to Ramanathapuram for all their eye care needs. This is a first Vision Centre of Aravind in the Island. This Vision Centre project is supported by “National Program for Control of Blindness”, Govt of India.
INAUGURATION OF VISION CENTRE
Marakkanam, July 14
A New Vision Centre was inaugurated at Marakkanam on July 14. Dr. A. Dharamarajan, Joint Director of Health Services, Villupuram inaugurated the centre. Dr. R.D. Ravindran, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Venkatesh, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Thiruvenkatakrishnan, Senior Medical Officer, received the guests and showed them the facilities provided in the centre. Kuthuvilakku was lit by Sponsors, BSNL officials and paramedical staff. Cross section of people from BSNL, Bank, Police Department, Schools & Government Departments participated in the function. It is important to note that first Broad Band Connection to Marakkanam was extended by BSNL officials at our request, which helped us to inaugurate the centre. It is a record that on the first day itself the vision centre’s Out Patient Department registered 82 patients, out of whom 20 were prescribed glasses.
INAUGURATION OF 3rd MANAGED EYE HOSPITAL
Amreli, July 20
The Aravind Eye Care System has started the Third Managed Eye Care Hospital “Sudarshan Netralaya” in association with Nagardas Dhanji Shanghvi Trust at Amreli, Gujarat. The eye hospital has 30 beds and will cater to the eye care needs of Amreli and the neighbouring districts.
The Hospital was inaugurated on 20th July, 2007 by Swami Shri Sachchitanandji, in the presence of Shri Dilip Shantilal Shanghvi, Managing Director of Sun Pharmaceuticals Ltd, and Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman of Aravind Eye Care System.
AN EVENING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC

It seems as if each Melody Friday concert is better than the last! The Melody Friday team certainly outdid expectations this month with the Classical Music concert held on the July 20. EYE HEALTH FIELD WORKERS TRAINING PROGRAMME
LAICO, July 1-20
A total of 15 members participated in the Field worker Module-2 Training Programme. The main objectives of the training Programme
- To strength the field workers in rehabilitation for the visually impaired
- To refresh the field workers in the training Programme conducted before
- To understand the Govt Schemes available for the visually impaired
There are various training programmes conducted for the field workers:
Orientation & Mobility training Programme was conducted at the Kalugarkadai village and Ulavar chandhai to the trainees for 10 days. Daily living skills training programmes like shaving, washing clothes etc was conducted at the natural home set up. To understand Educational rehabilitation concept the trainees were taken to Indian Association for the Blind (Special school), St.Mary’s Primary School (Integrated education), Vadipatti primary School (Inclusive education). Vocational rehabilitation was conducted in the Auroform like agricultural activities, animal husbandry in cattle shelter. Making house hold things like soap oil, agarbathi making etc was done under blindfold. At last Guest Lectures was conducted in the training programme under the topics of
- Government schemes & concessions available for visually impaired
- Inclusive education
- Animal Husbandry
CME ON CURRENT PRACTICES IN GLAUCOMA
Aravind-Tirunelveli, July 21-22
A two day CME on Current Practices in Glaucoma was held at Aravind-Tirunelveli from July 21-22 under the guidance of Dr.R.Ramakrishnan, CMO. The main purpose of this CME was to get familiarized with the changes and to get update. Ophthalmologists representing various States of our country, Postgraduates and Fellows, Trainees from Aravind Eye Hospital attended the CME. Experts who are richly experienced in practical management of Glaucoma were invited as Faculty members to discuss the recent advances and developments at a great length.
The inaugural function commenced with prayer song. Dr. G.R. Reddy lighted the kuthuvillaku. Dr. Vinay Nangia, Dr. Velayutham, and Dr. Devendra Sood participated in the function.
MS. GOWRI PRIYA SUBMITS HER THESIS
AMRF, July 11
Ms. Gowri Priya Chidambaranathan had registered for Ph.D in Bio-Medical Science at Madurai Kamaraj University in November 2002. She worked under the guidance of Dr.VR.Muthukkaruppan, PhD Guide & Director – Research, Aravind Medical Research Foundation, Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. She has completed her work and submitted the thesis on “Aetiology and Pathogenic Mechanism of Uveitis associated with Leptospirosis” in November 2006 at the university.
MLOP RETREAT
Dhan Foundation, July 6-7
MLOP Retreat was held at the ‘Dhan Foundation’ near Chozhavandhan for the MLOPs to provide a casual, stimulating and refreshing experience. The retreat was attended by MLOPs from all departments of all Aravind Eye Hospitals. The group also included the HR team from all the AEHs as well as the Nursing Superintendents. It was conducted to get a sense of the MLOPs expectations and desires and their suggestions to make Aravind an employer of choice as well as a more efficient workplace. On July 7, 2007 the group was joined by the Ophthalmologist in charge of MLOPs- Dr Usha, Dr Veena and Dr Meenakshi. They listened to their recommendation and provided their inputs on how this can be translated into reality. The MLOPs felt this forum gave them a unique opportunity and they look forward to their suggestions getting implemented as well as for this Retreat to become an annual feature. |

RAHUL GANDHI SPENDS AN EVENING WITH AMETHI HOSPITAL STAFF
Amethi, July 27
Amidst the busy political schedules Mr. Rahul Gandhi found time to call for a dinner with the IGEHRC staff. He reached the guest house around 8.00pm after his day long travel through his constituency. There was a crowd of 60 to 70 people awaiting him excluding the officials from the near by areas. He finished all his pre-occupancies and joined us for the meeting at 9.00pm along with Mr. Kanishka Singh, Mr. Manoj Muttu, Mr. Sachin and Ms. Vijaya Moorti which was followed by dinner. All the doctors and staff of IGEHRC were present. It was the request from Mr. Rahul Gandhi that he wanted all the support staff also to be present for the dinner...

WORKSHOP FOR MLOP-HR REPRESENTATIVES
LAICO, July 2-5
A four day workshop was conducted at LAICO by the HR department for the MLOPS selected as MLOP- HR Representatives from all the five Aravind Eye Hospitals. The workshop provided them an overview of the role played by HR representatives in being the MLOP. The HR team from all the 5 hospitals participated in the workshop. Last 2 days of the workshop was joined by the Nursing Superintendents of all Aravind Eye Hospitals. The Nursing superintendents provided advice on how they can support the whole Programme. Each of the MLOP-HR representatives developed an action plan which they presented in the workshop.
ATN RETREAT 2007
LAICO, July 28
Aravind Tele-ophthalmology Network (ATN) Retreat was held at LAICO on July 28 to manage the present challenges and realize the newer opportunities.
Realizing the potential of providing quality tertiary eye care and contributing to continuous education irrespective of challenges like accessibility and availability, Aravind Eye Care System has extended the scope of utility of information technology by setting up Aravind Tele-ophthalmology Network (ATN) in June 2002. Now stepping in its fifth year this network has thus far taken different initiatives
- Benefiting patients be it at the level of primary or tertiary eye care
- Providing impetus to our training programmes
- Enabling to foster closer ties across Aravind Eye Care System
Aravind is also exploring various options to make this technology user-friendly. One of the major milestones will be the day we start our Virtual Academy.

Wenzhou optometry school, China, July 3
Dr. Ilango, Medical Consultant visited Wenzhou school of optometry & Research Centre and Eye Hospital. In Wenzhou he studied optometry programmes, curriculum, research labs, and teaching facilities. Wenzhou optometry school is one of the two colleges which has been given national approval in China to offer doctorate in optometry. He also had an opportunity to visit Wenzhou Eye Hospital and its facilities which is well equipped to offer primary optometry Eye Care.

ZONE TRAINERS WORKSHOP
Ootty, July 12-15
Mr. Sanil Joseph attended the Zone Trainers Workshop (ZTWS) organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) India hosted by JCI Ootty Chapter at Hotel Nahar International, Ootty. This was training and certifying workshop for eligible trainers of the Junior Chamber International and Mr. Sanil passed out as the second best among the 34 participants from different walks of life.
Junior Chamber International is a worldwide federation for young leaders and entrepreneurs between the age of 18 years and 40 years. It focuses on the personality development of the members with strong social responsibility.

USA, July 15- August 5
Ms. Veni, Administrator, LAICO visited USA from July 15-August 5. The main purpose of this trip was to visit various universities and get exposure in administration with special focus to planning, marketing, organizing, and evaluating the regular executive training programmes and CME programmes offered at Aravind.
Strategic Perspective in Non profit Management
Harvard University, Boston, July 15-21
Ms. Veni attended a weeklong course on “Strategic Perspectives in Non profit Management” at Harvard Business School. A total of 140 candidates participated from various non profit sectors. 72% of the participants were from the United States and the rest were from other countries.
Ms. Veni visited Michigan University and Chelsea Hospital in USA from July 22-28. There she had discussions with Mr. Ron Bendersky, Executive Director of Executive Education Programme, and Dr. Van Harrison, Director, Department of Medical Education. She visited Chelsea Hospital and met Ms. Cindy Harrison and other department heads.
In California Ms. Veni visited Stanford University, Berkeley University and Seva office from July 29-August 5. At Berkeley, she visited the Optometry and Health Science Library, Hass Business School at University of Berkeley and the International Housing facilities. She also had the opportunity to visit the Programme office of AAO, Google Campus and Seva Office. At the end of her visit, she went to the Stanford University and met with the Programme team of Student Data Base, the Executive Education Programme team and the Public Management Programme team. Ms. Veni had a brief tour of all the Universities to observe the class room facilities, technology used and its administrative functions and had the opportunity to meet the concerned department seniors and discuss about their concerned activities and challenges related to the education and training activities. |

With the beginning of July, the season of conferences begin for the year 2007-08 and Aurolab actively participated in trade exhibitions of following CMEs and conferences to promote the products of Aurolab. Members from Aurolab represented in the stalls and enthusiastically explained about the products and its benefits to the delegates visiting the stall. The participation in various shows provided Aurolab members an opportunity to meet the customers and reinforce, update about the products.

SRI LANKAN TEAM VISIT
July 9

Visitors to Aravind School of Optometry
July 27-August 9
The two volunteers, Dr.Jennifer L.Stone, an optometrist and Mr. Adam Stone, rehabilitation personnel from Maryland, USA were at Aravind-Madurai from July 27-August 9, for offering a voluntary support in optometry and rehabilitation services.
During her visit, Dr. Jennifer stone had official meetings with senior Doctors in Aravind School of Optometry other faculties in optometry school about the course curriculum and training programmes.
On part of it, a special workshop was conducted on August 1 among the refraction staff. The main purpose of this program was to get familiarized with 'Prism and clinical applications’ and to get update in ‘Visual function evaluation of patient with defective vision. All senior refraction and pediatric refraction staff from all the five Aravind Hospitals participated in this program. This workshop was very useful to them better understand the importance of Prism that to be incorporated with spectacle correction.
