Aurolab Celebrates Silver Jubilee

Twenty five years ago what started as just an IOL manufacturing division, now has diversified to manufacture all essential ophthalmic supplies and indigenous equipment. Aurolab brought down the price of IOLs, making them affordable to the common man and revolutionised the field of cataract surgery by introducing a wide variety of lenses. Today Aurolab manufactures over 200 products in its international standard facility and exports to over 160 countries worldwide. The product range includes intraocular lenses, sutures, pharmaceutical products, surgical blades and equipment.
Mr.Karumuttu.T.Kannan Chairman and Managing Director of Thiagarajar Mills Madurai was the Chief Guest for the silver jubilee celebrations. Dr.D.Ramamurthy, President - All India Ophthalmic Society and chairman, The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore, participated in the event Guest of Honor and delivered the felicitation address. Mr.R.D.Sriram, Joint Managing Directo, welcomed the audience. Dr.P.Balakrishnan, Managing Director presented the 25th year report which captured the growth of the organization from a humble beginning of 10 people to its present size of 800 employees. He also reiterated the main focus of Aurolab being development of necessary products at affordable rates with the best of quality. The silver jubilee souvenirwas released by the chief guest and the first issue was received by Dr.D.Ramamurthy. The event concluded with soulful rendering of songs by Aurolab staff and enthralling dance performance by Mrs.Harsha troupe. Mr. Krishnakumar, Senior Manager, delivered a vote of thanks.
Angaadi 2016
Aravind – Madurai, December 17
Now in its third year, Angaadi again became a hit, thanks to the whole-hearted dedication and commitment of staff and employees. The charity fest was organized this year too to raise money to help the less privileged. The unique feature is that the items at sale are brought in by the staff members and sod amongst themselves. Mr.G.Srinivasan inaugurated the event, which saw wide participation from all cadres of staff. Proceeds from the sale of goods were donated to Aishwaryam Trust, Kadachanenthal and MS.Chellamuthu Trust, Madurai.
Aishwaryam Trust is well-known for its exceptional service in palliative care to the elderly and destitute while Chellamuthu Trust offers quality psychiatry care and rehabilitates mentally ill people.
JagritiYatris at Aravind

This year too, Aravind found place in the travel itinerary of JagritiYatris. Mr.R.D.Thulasiraj and Dr.S.Aravind addressed the gathering and cleared their questions. Song Enga Madura was played which received wide applause from the team. 480 yatris visited Aravind this time. A documentary capturing the unique Aravind model of compassion at work was released on the occasion.
BMJ Award for Aravind Eye Care System
Aravind – Pondicherry, November 19
Aravind Eye Care System was awarded the South Asia BMJ Award for the category Excellence in Medical Education. Dr.Marie Fredrick, Medical Consultant, Paediatric& Squint Services, Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry did all the ground work to present for the award and he received the same on behalf of Aravind.

Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman Emeritus, Aravind Eye Care System was honoured with Forbes India Leadership Awards (FILA) 2016 - Entrepreneur with Social Impact category at Hotel Trident, Mumbai. The Awards, now in their sixth year, celebrate transformational leadership and corporate excellence and is Forbes India’s most prestigious event. Dr. P. Namperumalsamy has been selected unanimously by the jury as he has taken Aravind Eye Care forward and made a deep-rooted impact on the community.

Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, 04 - 06 November 2016
Three of Aravind faculty, Dr. S.R. Krishnadas, Dr. R. Venkatesh and Dr. Ganesh V Raman were elected unanimously for the various prestigious positions in the Glaucoma Society of India. Dr. Krishnadas was elected as the President, Dr. Venkatesh as the Treasurer and Dr. Ganesh as the Convenor for the South Zone Glaucoma Education.
Inauguration of Cancer Genetics Centre

Retinoblastoma is the most common intra-ocular tumour of children. Unfortunately half of these are heritable. Aravind has been treating retinoblastoma cases and found very good results in those who presented early. Lot of work has been done at Aravind’s research institute on the gene responsible for retinoblastoma. A lot of mutations have been identified and cost effective methodology has been established to predict this disease in the siblings, offspring and secondary tumours in the same patient, results of which have been published. Now a cancer genetic testing lab has been established at Aravind - Madurai, thanks to the generous contribution made by Mr. ShyamPrakash Gupta and family. Dr. P. Namperumalsamy inaugurated the centre.The facility extends its services to patients beyond Aravind Eye Care System, at an affordable cost.
